Hard Times
« on: February 10, 2014, 07:06:42 AM »
I'm way behind on reading the forum. My DH had a stroke a week ago today.  We got him to the ER quickly and they did the tPA (clot buster) and he has no residual effects now. But one carotid artery is completely blocked (they can't/don't do anything about that). His other carotid is partially blocked so he will have to have surgery on that one. The best way would be to do it all from the neck area, but his is complicated because that's right where his scar is from cancer surgery and exactly where the radiation affected his skin the most. So, they may have to go through the groin and put stents in. That will be 2-3 weeks away.

Hi Deanna,

The good news is that your DH has already regained any skills he might have lost.  Even better news is that this is where our medical community actually has excellent skills and can do something about his problem.  They just are not so good at preventing the problem in the first place.

As Jan just said, we are holding you in our hearts and are wishing the best for you and your beloved.

Thanks everyone. We're a little down this week. The news is very good so far, but I think we're grieving. All your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

Thanks everyone for all your warm responses. DH is doing well. Had appt with vascular surgeon on Monday and also managed to get with the surgeon who did the cancer surgery on his temple and side of face. The two surgeons collaborated over the phone and they are in agreement that the best way to do it will be to do it all from the neck area...that's what we were hoping too. The surgeon wants to do one more test before he does surgery...a Doppler on his right carotid in case the tPA might have opened up that side. If that were the case, that side would become the priority. What a miracle that would be.

Update: DH had surgery on Friday the 14th to open up the carotid artery on the left side. It went GREAT! We came home yesterday and he is doing well. Gonna need some recovery time. Thanks to all of you for thoughts and prayers. We did find out that he had a second stroke in the last month that we didn't know about...no symptoms, no effects...seems impossible but that's what the MRI showed. We're thankful and feeling very blessed.

Lila, he had the carotid surgery on left side...did well. Then he had vertigo for about a week and a half...a miserable time. Then went to physical therapist. He did the Epley maneuver. It has worked well so far...no more vertigo. Monday he went back to surgeon for 1-month checkup. They did a Doppler and the surgery area looked like it was supposed to. Surgeon said he's doing good and dismissed him for a year unless he has further problems. We're very thankful. Thanks for checking on us!
