Anyone ever heard of raspberry ketones?
« on: May 04, 2013, 05:52:41 PM »
I was just watching this segment on Dr. Oz on raspberry ketones and how it helps lose weight.

I looked up some studies, but didn't see much on human trials.  Did find these though:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22551412    ( worked on rats )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20425690  ( good results on mice )

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18321745   ( this was on humans, but the study was about hair growth and skin elasticity, which improved )

So doing more research, I found this:

Quote
There are some studies on mice that were given raspberry ketone and it appeared to prevent weight gain when the little rodents were fed high-fat diets. Apparently the anti-obesity effects were due to stimulation of lipolysis (which is how the body breaks down fat in fat cells called adipocytes) in both regular fat tissue and brown fat tissue. It also suppressed release of pancreatic lipase, a digestive enzyme needed to break down dietary fats so they can be absorbed through the small intestinal wall.

However, that is going on the assumption that high fat diets cause weight gain, which we now know that fat helps you lose weight.  So I'm thinking the weight loss was because of the fat, not necessarily the raspberry ketones.

I tried raspberry ketones (and green bean coffee extract and every weight loss enhancer out there), and it upset my stomach, so I stopped. Right now I cling to the belief that if nutrition is corrected and all other systems are "go," then the body will naturally achieve a healthy weight without the use of OTC supplements. Having said that, though, I still take CLA 3x/day because we don't eat grass fed beef.
