This is just the start of the movement towards humanely raised chickens. If this farmer is successful, then others will be and the method will spread to other farms. No farmer wants his flock to be destroyed because the birds become sick. That is a 100% loss.
Just like the pig flu last year which killed so many young pigs and devastated the commercial farmers, these illnesses will become more frequent until the animals are raised in a healthier manner. Remember the salmonella problem in chickens and eggs about 15 years ago? The solution was to inform the public to eat only hard cooked eggs and well done (and dried out) chicken because the salmonella was in the raw egg and in the chicken flesh. Of course, the farmers too the easy way out and just gave their birds more antibiotics. Now, the bird flu makes those antibiotics useless and these weakened birds get sick quickly.
