The Dark Act
« on: August 24, 2015, 03:29:13 PM »
On July 23, 2015 the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1599 (275-150). This sweeping bill would prohibit any current or future state law requiring GMO labeling, while at the same time dramatically undercutting federal, state and local government oversight and regulation of GMOs (genetically modified organisms).
The revised bill also includes a mandate for the USDA to create its own non-GMO certification program.  This would allow sugar from GMO sugar beet, oil from GMO corn, canola, soy and cottonseed to be labeled Non-GMO!
Here is what you can do about it:

It looks like congress may hide this in a spending bill this week.

Feel free to copy and paste this into a Faceboook post:

The “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know” DARK Act is upon us!
PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!! Companies like Monsanto are trying to rule this country and take our rights away! Call TODAY 1-877-434-0011 .

PLEASE PROTECT YOUR RIGHT -TO KNOW what’s in your food! Congress has to pass the budget by the end of this week and Monsanto is trying to get the DARK Act included in the budget. If this happens all states would be prohibited from labeling GMOs!! Even the states that already have passed laws to label them. The “Denying Americans the Right-to-Know” (DARK) Act would:
- Preempt states from requiring labeling of GMO food.
- Virtually eliminate FDA’s ability to craft a national GMO labeling system.
- Codify the current, broken voluntary labeling system.
- Create a GMO “safety” review system based on industry science.
- Allow “natural” foods to contain GMO ingredients and preempt state efforts to end misleading “natural” claims.

Here is the call-in-number that you need to call TODAY 1-877-434-0011 . Please feel free to spread this far and wide. This is not just for Colorado! Anyone in the US can use this number so please share!
The nice thing about this number is that when people call it, they will have a short recording of what they can say and then it will connect the call to their D.C. Office. This number also allows us to track how many calls were made.
This is what the recording says:
" Thank you for taking action Please copy and paste and/or share!
ACTION IS NEEDED TODAY!!!

Good News!

Dark Act defeated! I just received this in my inbox from Food Democracy Now:

Dear Rita,
This is huge! With your help and hundreds of thousands of people just like you, we managed to shut down Monsanto in Congress by stopping the Dark Act policy riders that would have killed GMO labeling for good in America.

Yes, we've just cleared a major hurdle, but we need to build on this success! Many feared that Monsanto and the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) would be successful in inserting a rider to the spending bill, creating the ultimate Monsanto Protection Act, to short-circuit our collective hard work for the past 4 years by taking away states' rights to pass common sense GMO labeling laws. We're happy to report that Monsanto and Big Food were defeated - this time!

This means they'll have to come back after the New Year in January and redouble their efforts to pass a compromise that Monsanto and the GMA are desperate to achieve. But we can't allow them to get away with this. Nine out of ten Americans support GMO labeling and the other side has spent more than $200 million to kill GMO labeling, but with your help, we've been able to stop them. And we need you today to have the resources to stop them again when the New Year begins!

What good news!  Things really are changing, agonizingly slowly, but changing for the better nevertheless.

With all the challenges/chemicals/irradiation posed by these greedy corporations, we will be seeing better quality food.  This is because we are walking with our pocketbooks.   In the 3 years since I started this WOE, I'm finding pasture raised, properly fed chickens and eggs now at several local supermarket chains.  Same for grass fed beef, pork and lamb.  Larger selections of organic vegetables and fruits as well.  Surprisingly, these products are just a bit more expensive than the generic, but usually not a huge price difference any longer.  Farmers and companies need to make a profit to stay in business.  If farmers can profit from raising their meats and produce organically, then they will continue to supply the marketplace.  The ready availability of these products sure wasn't the case in 2012!
